Considering the food, water, and shelter, situation the children appear to be in surprisingly good health. There is a government clinic nearby that is run by two nurses who are quite capable. The government of Ghana offers a health program available to all. The cost for a child to obtain the government health card is 20 GH ($6 USD) and for an adult 40 GH ($13 USD). The cards are valid for one year and must be renewed. The annual renewal rate is half the original purchase price. To date the Akwakwaa Foundation has purchased health cards for each worker and for each teacher, and for approximately half the students who live at the school.
During the rainy season, usually May through November, the percentage of children who get malaria may be as high as 50%. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes. There is no netting on the dorm windows. In fact there are no windows at all, just window openings.
Your donation for health would greatly aid the overall health of the Orphanage. Any funds received specifying health would be used to purchase additional health cards for the children. To date, due to limited funding, no cards have been purchased for the day students from nearby villages.
